Remembering Ray: Quincy's 'grandfather of football' passes away

QUINCY, IL. (WGEM) -- Ray Hinkamper has died.

The long time supporter of Quincy Notre Dame football, and coach of the YMCA Redskins football team in Quincy for decades, passed away at his home Wednesday night.

QND football Bill Connell says he meant so much, to so many.

"At the end of the day he was the grandfather of football," Connell, who met Hinkamper in 1992 as a first-year head coach, said.

"A legend no doubt."

Connell says Hinkamper's mission extended beyond the playing field.

"He loved making young men better. Not only as football players but just young men."

Visitation will be Sunday from 3-7 p.m. at St. Francis and the funeral is Monday morning at 10 a.m., also at St. Francis.

Hinkamper was 78-years-old.
