MARION COUNTY, Mo. (WGEM) -

Teaching kids about responsibility; participants say that's what the Marion County Junior Swine Show is all about.

Thursday, the kids showed off their pigs, with some of them getting ready for the state fair. Organizers said preparation for the event is very time consuming, and teaches the kids the values of dedication and hard work.

"You have to own your pigs by the first of May, and then, just the nutrition and health part of it.," said Hog Exhibitor Kent O'Bryan. "But mainly nutrition. Hope your hogs gain well enough to make (weight), they have to make a certain weight to sell. So, it's a lot of time involved for a lot of these kids."

The Marion County Junior Swine Show has been going on for more than 50 years, and the fairgrounds now have pavilions so participants don't have to display their pigs in the streets like in the old days.

The Marion County fair schedule is posted below.
