QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) -

An archaeologist recently discovered the first complete human skeleton at the new Adams County Jail site in Quincy.

Before this latest discovery, crews found two sets of human remains while excavating on the southwest lawn of the courthouse.

The archeologist working there, Karen Atwell, said the preservation of the skeleton was exceptional, possibly for a couple reasons.

"Whether that was because she was in a nice coffin with brass tax and solid material in there, or whether it's just the soil conditions at this point that preserved the skeleton," Atwell said Friday at the site.

Atwell said the skeleton is a female who was probably in her 30s when she died.

Atwell said they have three more burial sites in the same area to excavate. She said if no other grave sites are found, she'll be done by the end of the month.
