QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) -

Dozens of Quincy runners began a 24-hour, 135-mile trek to Peoria Friday afternoon all in an effort to raise money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital-- which leads research efforts to better treat kids with cancer and other life-threatening diseases.

Quincy is one of 35 towns to participate in the run.

The Quincy Run has brought in almost $1-million since it started 12 years ago, according to organizers.

"The patients and the families, they never receive a bill," said St. Jude Run Coordinator for 2018 Becky Haskins. "The research is top notch, and because of these runs and the fundraising, the survival rates for childhood cancer has just increased dramatically over the years."

The group is expected to reach the halfway mark in Astoria at about 4:00 Saturday morning.

They'll stop there to eat breakfast, shower and fuel up before completing the run to Peoria.
