Leathernecks motivated as camp continues

MACOMB, Ill. (WGEM) -

One week down and three more to go when it comes to fall camp for the Western Illinois football program.

After losing their final three games and missing out on an FCS Playoffs berth the Leathernecks definitely felt motivated heading into fall camp.

" Maybe we took that bump in the road for a reason, just a little road block, to learn that nothing is guaranteed," said junior quarterback Sean McGuire.

"That's what this conference is. It's the best in the country."

The Leathernecks felt like the ending to last season was all they needed. Then, Western Illinois was picked to finish sixth in the Missouri Valley Football Conference in this year's preseason poll.

" We're going to learn from it. We're not going to let it drag us down," said head coach Charlie Fisher.

"You can't ever let that bring you backwards but it motivates you moving forward."

Meanwhile senior linebacker and Macomb product Brett Taylor learned Friday that he had been named to the Buck Buchanan Award watch list for National Defensive Player of the Year.

As a junior, Taylor was a late add to the list and finished seventh in the final voting.
