32 pounds of marijuana found during traffic stop in Monroe City

Marion County Sheriff's Office arrested a Chicago man for attempting to deliver marijuana Friday morning. 

Marion County prosecuting attorney David Clayton said a deputy stopped 30-year-old Daozheng Kang for speeding and after searching the vehicle, the deputy found 32 pounds of marijuana. 

In a probable cause statement by the sheriff's office, Deputy Shane Kirtlink pulled Kang over at 4:37 a.m. for driving 73 mph in a 65 mph zone on Highway 36 near Stoddard St. in Monroe City, Missouri. 

Deputy Kirtlink said due to signs of continuous travel inside the vehicle, implausible and changing story, and indicators of nervous behavior coming from Kang, He requested his consent to search the vehicle. 

10 pounds of vacuum sealed marijuana was located in the trunk, according to Kirtlink and 22 more were found inside laundry baskets inside the vehicle. 

The marijuana was taken and tested. Kirtlink said it tested positive for THC. 

Kang was taken to the Marion County Jail where his bond was set at $50,000 cash or surety.

Clayton said the charge carries a range of punishment up to 10 years in the Dept. of Corrections or up to 1 year in jail or a fine up to $10,000 or a combination.

Clayton said Kang's first court date will likely be August 11.
