NEBO, Ill. (WGEM) -

Local businesses gave back to veterans Saturday morning for the Heroes at Heartland event.

More than 70 veterans and their families received a free day of outdoor activities, including off-road riding, trap shooting and archery.

The event was at Harpoles's Heartland Lodge in Nebo, Illinois.

Organizers said it was a good feeling to see the vets having fun.

"I feel overwhelmed with the responses," Marcel Wagner with Great River Economic Development said." "It's been incredible. We have had people over the last week sign up. We've added 60-70 veterans and their families that are down here."

"It's a great feeling because we wouldn't be here if it wasn't for them," Gary Harpole with  Harpole's Heartland Lodge said. "I wouldn't be doing what I am doing here at Heartland Lodge, if it wasn't for the veterans. So it's a special day."

This was the first year of the event.
