Blessing Health System officials revealed more details Tuesday regarding plans for the former St. Mary Hospital at 14th and Broadway.

According to a news release, the last Blessing Hospital staff members have been moved out of the campus. Officials said a fence will be put up around the property before crews begin the process of decommissioning and securing the building.

The release stated crews intend to begin demolition this winter.

Blessing reported the remaining medical and office equipment will be donated to the Hospital Sisters Mission Outreach out of Springfield, Illinois.

Blessing officials said the former hospital was founded by the Fransiscan Sisters of the Poor and was known as St. Mary Hospital for 126 years.

“In addition to the Hospital Sisters Mission Outreach being an outstanding organization, it is an outstanding Catholic organization,” Blessing Health System President/CEO Maureen Kahn stated in the release. “Through this donation Blessing honors the work of the Franciscan Sisters of the Poor who opened St. Mary, Quincy’s first hospital.”

The release stated Blessing used the building for 24 years until this summer.

“As with all things, the 14th Street building reached the end of its useful life,” Kahn said. “However, the importance of the care provided under its roof and the compassion and faith with which the care was delivered will forever be a part of this community’s history.”

Blessing reported that no future plans for the property have been finalized.

“Blessing will retain the property and it will again, someday, play a role in the health of the communities served,” Kahn stated.
