KEOKUK, Ia. (WGEM) -

A piece of the Keokuk Dam, along with a big donation, will head to a new museum on 4th and Main in Keokuk.

Ameren Missouri presented a check of $50,000 as well as a piece of the dam's original control panel, to America's First Great Dam Foundation.

After so much interest during the 100th anniversary in 2013, the city and energy company decided to work together to preserve the history and keep it alive.

"That was our goal to have interactive displays so that people won't only have to read but also see how things operated,"  Vice President Kathy Asbury said.

"It's good history for people to see how things were built and operated, pre-computers," Warren Witt, Director of Hydro Operations at Ameren Missouri said.

The foundation hopes to open the museum next spring.
