QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) -

A heavily traveled Quincy road will be shut down for several months starting Monday.

The Illinois Department of Transportation will replace the Cedar Creek Bridge on North 24th Street. IDOT recently put a weight limit on the bridge. The department planned to replace the bridge several months ago.

Quincy Engineering Director Jeffrey Conte says the new bridge will be wider and will also allow for the Bill Klingner Trail to go under it when it's extended out through 24th Street.

"Safety of the traveling public is of most importance," Conte said. "So IDOT is being proactive in replacing that bridge before it becomes an issue."

Detour signs will be posted to help traffic get around the area while it's closed. IDOT expects the project to wrap up by the end of November.
