QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) -

The Missouri State Auditor says she's frustrated by the amount of fraud her office catches.

Auditor Nicole Galloway says an audit recently found Putnam County Memorial Hospital engaged in a $90-million billing scheme. The hospital allegedly billed insurance companies for work done at labs around the country and funneled much of the money to an outside lab.

Galloway says the hospital is now at risk of closing because of this and was already in a bad financial situation.

She also says some counties are making the same mistakes over and over. To her, it shows a disregard for taxpayer dollars.

"We want county and public officials to act in the best interest of the citizens that they're serving," Galloway said. "It is their responsibility to implement change based on an audit. When we see the same findings over and over again, it is frustrating and concerning."

Galloway says in those situations they turn the audit over to prosecutors to see if a crime has been committed. If not, it's up to those who are audited to enforce recommended changes.
