WEST POINT, Ia. (WGEM) -

People from all over the country gathered in Iowa to help kick off an old tradition.

West Point, Iowa held its 65th annual Shuck Fest Wednesday. The event was the start of the Sweet Corn Festival, which officially begins Thursday and will feature a carnival, arts and crafts, and food.

Participants say Shuck Fest brings people from all over the nation -- who grew up in West Point, back to the area.

"You're going to find more people come back to West Point sweet corn festival than any other time a year," said Mark Freitag, a West Point native who now lives in Montana and has participated in the event for the past 30 years. "Because, that's when they're going to see their classmates, their relatives -- family reunions, class reunions, all kinds of stuff like that."

Thursday's festivities will begin at 5 p.m. The festival will continue until Sunday evening.
