LA BELLE, Mo. (WGEM) -

Volunteer firefighters were trained by some of the best in Northeast Missouri on Saturday.

Sponsored by the Western Lewis Fire Protection, Newark Rural and Novelty-Plevna Fire Department participated in different emergency scenarios. Firefighters learned hands-on experiences like how to put on their gear, battle the flames as a team, and valuable safety tips while on the job.

Officials said in a high risk job, training is very important.

"It's what makes us good at our jobs and it's what keeps us safe," said Public Information Officer, Carol York with Newark Rural Fire. "It sets the standards for everything from the gear to the equipment and training that we have to go through. It makes sure everyone is doing the job the same way."

Training is a week long. After training they take their certification tests.
