QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) -

Illinois has now approved automatic voter registration. State lawmakers hope that the legislation will make it easier to register to vote.

Governor Rauner vetoed a similar bill last year amidst concerns about voter fraud.

The program automatically registers voters at government agencies like secretary of state offices unless they choose to opt out.

Adams County Clerk Chuck Venvertloh said on Monday that while he doesn't expect a big uptick in voters, he thinks the program will help those voting for the first time.

"I think maybe for the younger voter it's going to help them get registered right away, but they'll be able to go and vote right away, and they'll be able to vote without the concern of did I register, did I do something right or wrong, so it'll help the newer voters." Venvertloh.

Most of the program takes effect immediately, but it's implemented in phases, and will be fully in effect by July 2019.
