Authorities said a rural Schuyler County, Illinois, teenager died over the weekend following a crash Thursday.

Adams County Coroner James Keller said Payton Edwards, 17, was pronounced dead at Blessing Hospital on Sunday at 10:36 a.m.

Schuyler County Sheriff Bill Redshaw said his office was informed of the crash Thursday at approximately 9:30 a.m. He said it happened east of Brooklyn on Highway 101.

Redshaw said it appeared Edwards went off the roadway. He said she got the vehicle back on the road before it appeared to flip end-over-end, approximately three times.

Redshaw said Edwards was airlifted to Blessing Hospital.

Rushville-Industry High School Principal Brad Gooding released the following statement on the school district's Facebook page:

It is with heartfelt sadness I send this message.

Payton Edwards passed away yesterday from injuries sustained in an accident last week.
SID #5 and RIHS send our condolences to Payton's family. Please keep Payton's family in your thoughts and prayers.
Grief counselors will be on hand at RIHS on Tuesday, September 5 to help any student, teacher or staff member deal with this sad and tragic occurrence.

Funeral arrangements are not known at this time. However, any student who wishes to attend the funeral may be excused from school with a signed note, email, or phone call to the school from a parent/guardian. Students will still be allowed to participate in an evening activity if one is scheduled the day of the funeral and they attend the funeral. When RIHS learns of the arrangements we will pass them onto you.

Editor's note: The Adams County Coroner previously reported the victim's first name as "Peyton."
