HANNIBAL, Mo. (WGEM) -

Not all residents want to see the the board that oversees the Hannibal Board of Public Works shut down.

A petition filed Friday sought to have that section of the city charter removed. Kellie Cookson, one of the people who filed the petition, said it was so council would have more control and let residents have more of a say.

Two water quality advocates say they want BPW to focus on removing ammonia from the water and not have this be a distraction.

"You need qualified people to be on the board," Rhonda Fogle said. "They have been putting board members on here lately that we are so happy with and that we believe are going to work in the right direction."

"The city council has no experience in managing BPW," Crystal Stephens said. "I do want BPW to be under the control of the city."

Both said they'd like to see the BPW board turned into an elected position at some point. 2nd Ward Councilman Mike Dobson said Friday elected doesn't mean people are qualified to make decisions for electric and water.
