For many children a syringe can be one of the things they fear most, but officials at the Adams County Health Department said flu shots are important for the health of your child. They have the flu vaccine in stock and health officials said it's not too early to get the flu shot.

Jon Campos, the infectious disease supervisor, said flu season is just around the corner which means now is the time to get your flu shot.

He explained that the influenza virus spreads faster and affects more people on a year-to-year basis than any other virus.

"The more people in our community that are getting the flu shot, the less the flu will come through our community and harm those we are most worried about" Campos said.

Campos said the flu hits elderly, infants, and people with compromised immune systems the hardest, and many of the deaths that come from the flu every year are from those groups. He said for those groups, a flu shot could save their lives.

But Campos says if you catch the flu, you could be the reason someone at risk gets it which he says is preventable by simply getting a flu shot.

"The flu shot is recommended for anyone healthy enough to have it," Campos said. "The flu shot prevents you from getting the flu and also preventing you from passing the flu to someone else."

Campos said the health department will have several different flu clinics specifically for the flu shot in the near future.

Their immunization clinic hours are Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. although they close for lunch from 12 to 1 p.m. No appointments are necessary as walk-ins are welcome, and Campos said most insurances will cover the cost of the flu shot.
