United Way kicks off annual fundraiser

They help adults and kids those with disabilities and families struggling on welfare.

The United Way of the Mark Twain Area kicked off its 22nd annual campaign Thursday night to raise money for those in need in northeast Missouri-- about 100 people gathered this afternoon at central park in Hannibal.

This United Way chapter serves 5 counties in northeast Missouri, its executive director estimates they've helped one third of that population.

"There's a theory out that says six degrees of separation," said Executive Director Frank Di Tillo. "That between a friend, to a friend, to a friend, within six people you know everybody in the world. Well, with the United Way in northeast Missouri it's just one. We touch everybody. You and your neighbor."

United Way focuses on youth education, health, welfare services and financial stability.
