ST. LOUIS (AP) - A man is hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries after allegedly ordering two men out of a car at gunpoint, only to find the men were St. Louis detectives, who shot him.
Interim Police Chief Lawrence O'Toole says two detectives on Tuesday saw a Nissan believed to be taken in a carjacking. O'Toole says that when their unmarked police car pulled up next to the Nissan, a 21-year-old man got out, pointed an assault-style weapon, and demanded they get out.
The officers and gunman exchanged shots. The man was struck several times but is expected to recover.
O'Toole says it wasn't clear how many others were in the vehicle, which was found abandoned. Police learned the Nissan was carjacked in October.
One officer suffered facial injuries from broken glass.
