ADAMS COUNTY, Ill. (WGEM) -

A fire destroyed a home in rural Adams County Sunday morning, according to Tri-Township Fire officials.

Firefighters said they arrived at 1069 County Road 1453 East around 2 a.m. When crews arrived, the house was fully engulfed in flames.

Firefighters said a husband and wife were home at the time, but they did make it out without injuries.

Lt. Richard Kestner with the Tri-Township Fire Department said they fire started as a chimney fire and quickly spread to the attic.

"With chimney fires everyone thinks it's from the green wood and stuff like that, but this here was from a malfunction of the stove itself," Kestner said. "Have somebody check your fire place, your wood stoves and clean your chimney all the time, and burn dry wood because it won't create all the soot in your chimney."

Kestner said the home is a complete loss and the Red Cross is assisting the family.
