Illinois Congressman Darin LaHood was selected to serve on the House Ways and Means Committee, according to a news release.

The release from LaHood's office stated the House Republican Steering Committee, chaired by Speaker Paul Ryan, selected LaHood to serve on the committee.

The release stated the appointment came after Rep. Pat Tiberi (R-OH) announced his pending resignation from congress last year. It stated the Committee on Ways and Means is the oldest committee in Congress and is the chief tax-writing committee in the House of Representatives. It stated the committee has jurisdiction over all taxation, trade and tariffs and other revenue-raising measures.

The appointment will be confirmed by the House Republican Conference in the coming days, according to the release.

“I am honored to be chosen by my colleagues to serve on the Ways & Means Committee,” LaHood stated. “With this position, I will continue advocating for central & West-Central Illinois on many issues important to the 18th District and my constituents, including tax policy, making health care more accessible and affordable, free & fair trade, and protecting entitlement programs for current and future seniors."

The release stated the Committee on Ways and Means has six subcommittees pertaining to issues in health, human resources, oversight, tax policy, social security and trade.

The release stated that with this appointment LaHood will step down from his current committee appointments on the House Committee on Natural Resources and the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology.
