QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) -

May is National Water Safety Month and the Quincy Family YMCA, Quincy Park District, Sheridan Swim Club and Jackson-Lincoln Swimming Complex have partnered together to bring a water safety initiative to Quincy.

Amber Brown, Aquatics Coordinator at the Quincy YMCA said "The Safety Around Water Program is a free program designed to engage and educate youth about the importance of water safety skills and provide more of America's youth access to water safety lessons."

To help achieve its goal to make children more aware of water safety, the Quincy Family YMCA is visiting all first grade classrooms in the Quincy Public School District this week.

Today Brown visited first graders at Dewy Elementary in Quincy. Brown said says she talked to the younger students about rescue and safety skills, wearing life jackets and more because they like to be around the water during the summer months, but most are in-experienced swimmers.

"Get your kids in swimming lessons, so they know the basics, how to float on back, how to jump in and reach the side if they can't touch, so everyday basic stuff even if they can't swim know how to keep their head above water and make it to the side safely," Brown said.

In addition to the 30 minute classroom introduction to water safety, children also be invited to take part in a free water safety class at the Quincy Family YMCA, Quincy Park District, Sheridan Swim Club or the Jackson-Lincoln Swimming Complex  on June 6th.
