HANNIBAL, Mo. (WGEM) -

If you driven through America's Hometown in the past few days you may have noticed new billboards underscoring heroin and opioid use.

The billboards are part of a multi-department initiative to bring awareness in the fight against opioids. Hannibal Police, Fire, and the Marion County Sheriff's Office unveiled the billboards as part of their "Bring the HEET" initiative earlier this week, which depicts the dangers of using heroin.

"Enforcement is a vital part of trying to get people off of heroin, but you can't arrest your way out of it," said Lt. John Zerbonia with the Hannibal Police Department. "So we want to try to educate and treat people with heroin problems."

Members from all three departments are also speaking about the topic at area school and organizations. They're also using videos featuring testimony from Hannibal families who have lost a loved one to opioids.
