FORT MADISON, Ia. (WGEM) -

Fort Madison Police said the BNSF bridge that connects Niota, Illinois and Fort Madison, Iowa was closed Sunday afternoon for a while but opened after maintenance work.

The department posted on its Facebook page Sunday afternoon that the BNSF bridge will be closed for electrical work and an update will be posted once the bridge has reopened.

About an hour later, the department posted an update:

"Great news! You can now travel across the bridge! Unless there is a barge passing, then you must wait again. Nonetheless it's open now and don't forget to pay the toll booth operator!"

The bridge has been known to close in the past for maintenance work and causing headaches for drivers.

Around this time last year, the bridge closed and caused travel problems during daily commutes.
