Charged Up: Illini West boys track looks for title defense

Last Spring the Illini West boys track & field team rolled into the state meet hoping to earn a trophy, and boy did they.

In fact, they won the whole thing and brought a state championship back to Carthage.

As the Chargers look ahead to the soon-coming postseason they hope to head back to the state meet to repeat as champions. It won't be easy but with the roster the Chargers have, they feel like it can be done.

"It's going to be very difficult," said head coach John Artman.

"We lost a lot of pieces from last year. With that said I think we have seven events, right now, that I confident at getting back (to state in). That's enough to win it."

"That's been our goal since last year. We lost a lot of guys from last year's team but I think we still have enough depth to get it done," said senior distance runner Jacob Bryan.

Meanwhile, to try and defend their title the Chargers are shaking things up to land more medals at the state meet.

So, some members of the team, including Jacob Bryan and Connor Artman,  are taking on new events to hopefully bring home a trophy.

"We have a couple of kids who are doing new events that can place at state but they're really new at them," said John Artman.

"Connor Artman in the triple jump as only done it three times in his life. Jacob Bryan is running the 400 (meter). He's only done that three or four times in his life. With those two events there is a lot of technical work involved."

For Connor Artman, the art of the triple jump hasn't been lost of him, however, he is still trying to iron out the details

"I did it probably three weeks ago for the first time since freshman year at Lewistown," said Connor.

"I did pretty well, I jumped 44-feet 11-inches. We're just trying to figure it out. It's very technical event so we're working on a lot of technique."

The Chargers begin their state title defense in the Rushville-Industry sectional on Wednesday May 16.
