Northeast Missouri humane society receives donation

The Northeast Missouri humane society in Hannibal received a donation.

Mary Bell Gentry, who died in 2015, donated her estate to the humane society.

The money will fund a new animal shelter, something the current director, Janet Smith, said is long overdue.

"Sheltering has come a long way from the dog pound era and that's kinda what we're in now." said Smith. "Shelters are built now to include community involvement."

She said some of that involvement would include better areas for people to visit and play with the animals to keep them active rather than locked up.

Right now there is no timetable for when the new shelter will be built.
