QPD discusses training after officer-involved shooting

Monday night's officer involved shooting is bringing to the forefront the question of training for Quincy police officers.

Deputy Chief Doug VanderMaiden says officers are trained for the situation that played out Monday night, when 52-year-old Rollie Davis Senior pulled out a pellet gun, which closely resembled a firearm. The officer responded by shooting the man multiple times.

Vandermaiden says every situation is unique and officers are trained to handle each situation accordingly.

"We expect our officers to eliminate any threat towards them or others," said VanderMaiden. "So it is not unusual if more than one shot is fired."

The Adams County State's Attorney says early indications show the officer followed his training Monday night.  Vandermaiden says officers at the Quincy Police Department receive different types of use of force training throughout the year including lethal force type training.
