Adams County Board votes 'No' to proposed swine facility

ADAMS COUNTY, Ill. (WGEM) -

The Adams County Board unanimously rejected building a proposed swine facility.

Pike Pigs Systems and Gin Ridge LLC wants to build the facility east of Columbus, near Camp Point.

Several residents from Columbus and Camp Point Township spoke out at Tuesday night's Adams County Board Meeting.

They believe the facility could hurt quality of life in the area by lowering property values and bringing a foul odor.

"I would say that this board in general is never opposed to commerce and development in the county," said Bret Austin, Finance Committee Chairman. "I wouldn't want those owners to think that and I wouldn't want the public to think that but in general, this just wasn't a very good fit right at this moment at that location."

The decision by the board was an advisory vote. It is non-binding. The Department of Agriculture still has the final say.
