HANNIBAL, Mo. (WGEM) - Veterans Elementary School students in Hannibal are making a difference and warming the hearts of those in need by warming their feet.

Students in kindergarten through fifth grade collected 1,139 new pairs of socks during their Socktober event last month.

Socks will be donated to local families and organizations after Thanksgiving.

First-grade teacher Mindie Shafer said there’s an extreme need to help community members right now.

“A lot of people were in major need of lots of things, food, socks, underwear, all types of donations,” Shafer said. “It’s a really wonderful thing to be able to help our community in any way possible. If socks are a way to help people at this time, any little bit helps.”

Shafer said they are still accepting donations of brand new socks.

They can be dropped off at the school at 790 N. Veterans Road in Hannibal.
