How to put up holiday decorations safely
QUINCY (WGEM) - Now that Thanksgiving is over, many people are planning to put up a Christmas tree and decorate their homes with lights.
Firefighters are urging safety while setting up decorations this holiday season.
Quincy Firefighter Ryan Kamphaus said that candles are responsible for 45% of decoration-related fires in December and January.
Kamphaus also said it is crucial to how to properly hang lights inside and outside the home.
“Usually a lot of strands will tell you how many you can put in a row and with that, you want to make sure you’re not overloading outlets, not using extension cords as permanent wiring and that the extension cord is rated for that type of lights and electricity that you’re gonna run through it,” he said.
Putting real Christmas trees inside your home can also lead to a higher chance of a fire starting.
“We want to make sure that we are always keeping those watered and always looking for signs that that tree may be drying out,” Kamphaus said. “Once it starts that drying out process, the fires are a lot more likely to happen and that tree is going to burn really quick if something does happen.”
If decorations are being hung up high, Kamphaus recommends using a sturdy ladder on a non-slippery surface, and having someone act as a spotter.
