QUINCY (WGEM) - For those that keep track, the beginning of this year’s hurricane season started off at very fast pace with one storm after another. While it was an active hurricane season with 21 named storms, after the one, two punches thrown at Louisiana, things did quiet down as far as landfalling storms go. The bulk of the storms formed and stayed out in the Atlantic. 21 named storms makes this the third most active season in modern times. This season falls behind 2020′s record 30 storms and 2205′s 28 storms. Four of the storms developed into major hurricanes, meaning Category 3 or higher. The 2021 major hurricanes were Hurricane Grace, Hurricane Ida, Hurricane Larry and Hurricane Sam. Only 8 of this year’s 21 named storms made landfall in the United States. Most of the storms weakened before landfall. Hurricane season goes from June 1 to November 30th and occasionally storms will develop outside of those months.
