FORT MADISON (WGEM) - Renovation efforts at Fort Madison’s historic train depot are almost complete.

Fort Madison mayor Matt Mohrfeld said crews are putting the finishing touches on the terminal, installing locks, and putting in and polishing windows and countertops.

Mohrfeld said the city will hold a grand-opening ceremony on Dec. 10.

He said a handful of officials will ride to Galesburg, Illinois, then ride the train back and make the first inaugural stop at the depot sometime around 6:30 p.m.

“We’re going to have Amtrak here. W’re going to have some people from the state here. We’re going to have city people here. We’re going to have citizens here. We’re going to have railroad enthusiasts here,” Mohrfeld said. “It’s going to be a fun time. We’re going to have fireworks, a band, some refreshments.”

Mohrfeld said the renovated depot will not only have better curb appeal than the current depot, but it will also be better situated to funnel travelers right into the heart of the downtown area.
