BROWN COUNTY, Ill. (WGEM) - The defense rested Tuesday in the case of the Mount Sterling man accused of shooting and killing a woman more than two years ago in Brown County.

John Michael Dean, 42, is charged with first-degree murder.

Prosecutors said Dean shot Rebecca Niewohner, 44, with a .45-caliber handgun on June 14, 2019.

Police said they responded to the call of a shooting in the 400 block of East Chestnut Street in Mount Sterling. That’s where they said they found her dead, and Dean with what they say looked like a gunshot wound to the face.

The prosecution rested its case last Thursday.

Closing arguments in the case are expected Wednesday in Brown County Circuit Court.
