QUINCY (WGEM) - WGEM received top honors at the Illinois Broadcasters Association’s annual awards ceremony held virtually this week.

WGEM Television and Radio was nominated as finalists for eight Silver Dome awards over dozens of other entries from stations throughout Illinois.

The highlight of the ceremony was WGEM-TV being named Station of the Year.

“In a year full of so much challenge and change for everyone, our team took its responsibility more seriously than ever to provide reliable and accurate information to the public,” said WGEM Vice President and General Manager Ben Van Ness. “I am honored to work alongside this team that cares so much about the communities it serves.”

In addition, WGEM News dominated the awards for Breaking News, taking home all three awards given for Spot News.

“We take our role as local journalists very seriously every day, but especially so during situations like severe weather and other breaking news events when we know people are counting on us for emergency information,” said WGEM News Director Chad Mahoney. “Receiving awards such as these only motivates our journalists to work harder to better inform our viewers.”

WGEM also dominated the sports competition for both television and radio. Sports Director Tony Cornish Jr. was named Best TV Sportscaster for the second consecutive year. The play-by-play team of Cornish, Broc Hampsmire, Eric Ervin and Will Conerly took home the Best Radio Play-by-Play award for the call of the QHS/QND basketball game in March. WGEM Sports Center host Ryan Mumma was named Best Radio Personality.

The station also took home awards in the categories of Best Radio Non-Humorous Commercial, Best Radio Series and Best Radio Self-Promotion.

“We appreciate the acknowledgement by our broadcasting peers, and are extremely thankful of the recognition for the consistent work that our team performs each day,” said WGEM Marketing Manager Shawn Dickerman.
