FORT MADISON (WGEM) - City officials in Fort Madison are looking to add 1,000 people to the city’s population over the next four years.

Mayor Matt Mohrfeld said it’s vital that Fort Madison looks to find people who want a place to grow and prosper as many small, Midwestern towns are at a tipping point.

“That tipping point is to die a slow death or to prosper, “ he said. “To prosper without some growth or regaining population it has had in the past, which our infrastructure is built around, is essential.”

He said to do that, they will create a plan made up of seven focused topics key to attracting and retaining residents:

  • Housing
  • Jobs
  • Infrastructure
  • Curb appeal
  • Public safety
  • Quality of life
  • Targeted marketing

Mohrfeld said the next step is putting together a visioning group which would then split into the seven different focus areas to come up with a comprehensive plan for each one.
