Homeless escape Hannibal house fire without injury

QUINCY (WGEM) - Hannibal fire crews responded to a house fire early Wednesday morning.

Hannibal Fire Department Public Education Coordinator Mark Kempker said crews responded to a report of a structure fire at 201 Dowling around 2:05 a.m.

He said 10 firefighters arrived on the scene, and five more had were called into battle the blaze.

Kempker said homeless individuals were using the house with the permission of the owner, and all occupants escaped without injury. He said no firefighters were injured either.

Kempker said the individuals were using a propane turkey fryer as an alternative heat source in the home that had no utilities.

HFD was assisted on scene by Hannibal Police, Marion County Ambulance, HBPW, Building Inspector office and Missouri State Fire Marshal’s office.

Kempker said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
