FORT MADISON (WGEM) - The effort to upgrade Highway 61 through Fort Madison is set to get underway once again.

The city council approved a bid of roughly $7.9 million for a local contractor to start the next phase of the project at their meeting Tuesday evening.

For the last couple of years, the city has been working to turn the four lane highway into a three lane conversion.

This latest phase will upgrade 10th through 18th Street.

Mayor Matt Mohrfeld said the rehab project is an important part of getting the city to where they want it to be.

“As we talk about growth of our town, infrastructure is so critical and updating this road is right in the background of that so we’re proud to be moving forward on that,” he said.

Mohrfeld said the contractor is set to be released to begin the project next month.

He said the project is designed to roll into the next year and finish up next spring, as they’re trying to minimize inconvenience for the people and businesses along that stretch of road.
