QUINCY (WGEM) - A portion of IL 336 near N 2475th Ave was shut down on Saturday at 11:09 a.m. due to a two vehicle crash in the southbound lane between Mendon and Loraine.

According to the Adams County Sheriff’s Office, three fatalities resulted from the crash.

Police said a truck and a sedan were involved in the accident.

According to Chief Deputy Sam Smith, the driver of the truck was killed. Smith reported that the driver of the sedan and a juvenile passenger were also killed in the crash.

Smith said two other juveniles in the sedan were injured. Air Evac transferred one of them to Springfield for treatment, the other was transported to St. Louis Children’s Hospital by ambulance.

The crash is being investigated by the Adams County Sheriff’s Office with assistance from the Illinois State Police and names will be released after notification of family members.

Smith wanted to thank all the individual community members who stepped up and helped the crash victims.

“These types of accidents, we don’t have them everyday. That’s very traumatic for families involved, but also for our responders,” Smith said.

“We had a large amount of private citizens who were on the interstate, were present, and came onto the crash and they basically were first responders there and they did God’s work....” Smith said. “I mean the work that they did for those individuals impacted was phenomenal.”

He said if you saw the crash or helped the victims to contact the Adams County Sheriff’s Office at 217-277-2202 if you need help or someone to talk to.

As of 5:54 p.m. on Saturday, both lanes are open and the scene is cleared.

Residents in Mendon’s community spoke about how incidents like this bring the community together.

“Mendon’s a very tight knit community, usually even involving Loraine, so pretty much everybody knows everybody, so you know our hearts just go out to prayers for the family you know to get through this,’ resident Sharon Gooding said.

Resident Mark Peter said many locals work for the fire departments in surrounding areas that responded to the crash.

“Well I know we had a lot of our local people up like our fire department here in Mendon, the fire department in Loraine, you know they are all volunteers and so we had a lot of local people involved in the rescue work and the you know clearing the accident site and all of that,” Peter said.
