BEAUFORT, S.C. (WTOC/Gray News) – A 2-year-old died at a hotel in South Carolina Saturday, according to the Beaufort Police Department.

Authorities say officers were called to respond to the Country Inn and Suites after reports of a 5-year-old walking around the hotel alone. When police arrived, the 5-year-old was wet, and the clerk said she thought the kid was coming from the pool, according to Lt. Charles Raley.

Police went to the pool and found the child’s 2-year-old brother at the bottom. Officers attempted CPR, but were unsuccessful.

The children’s mother was found in a hotel room. There was a man in the room too, along with a 9-month-old kid that belongs to both the man and the woman, according to Lt. Raley.

Police said the 5-year-old and an infant were taken in by the department of social services.

No charges have been filed at this time and the investigation is ongoing. The parents are being investigated for potential negligence.

After the autopsy Tuesday, the Beaufort County coroner confirmed that the cause of death was drowning and ruled the manner of death as accidental.
