Tom Sawyer Days underway in Hannibal
HANNIBAL (WGEM) - Tom Sawyer Days have officially kicked off in Hannibal.
Tom Sawyer Days is an event that has been running in Hannibal since 1956. Tom Sawyer Days second-year Chairman Ashley Veach said this year, a new activity is being introduced in the form of a disc golf tournament.
“I personally feel like it’s an opportunity to see us put everything aside,” Veach said. “The community really does come together for this entire week. You’ll see people down here all day, all night. The fireworks, the rides and things like that, so it’s just really awesome to see that we can still come down here and celebrate as a community and a country.”
She said the usual activities will also be present, such as a cornhole tournament, craft fair and parade.
Veach said this event has changed greatly over the years. She said when it first started, it wasn’t during the Fourth of July weekend and was eventually moved and even renamed.
People come from throughout the Tri-States and even across the country to celebrate the Fourth of July in Hannibal.
Tom Sawyer Days run until Sunday. The annual parade begins Friday at 10 a.m.
